Volunteer Spotlight: Making a Difference, One Event at a Time
For many high school students, balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and future aspirations is already a tall order. But for one Deep Run High School senior, contributing to her community is just as important as preparing for her future. Inspired by her experiences with Better2gether, she took the initiative to start the Better2gether Club at her school, Deep Run High School, creating opportunities for students to volunteer and make a difference.
“I’ve always wanted to find ways to give back,” she shared. “When I attended the holiday party with my dad and met Stephanie, I realized this was something I could be part of.” That encounter sparked her journey with Better2gether and helped solidify her interest in a future medical career. Whether as a surgeon or anesthesiologist, she’s eager to pursue a pre-med track, focusing on biochemistry or chemistry.
In her role as the founder of the Better2gether Club, she’s been instrumental in rallying fellow students—most of whom are seniors—to support events and programs. The club, now in its fourth year, has become a reliable source of volunteers for Better2gether, ensuring a strong connection between students and the organization’s mission.
“One of my favorite memories was volunteering at the Children’s Museum,” she recalled. “I was paired with Dillon, a Better2gether kid, and we had such a great time. It was a special moment that reminded me how meaningful these events are for everyone involved.”
Through her dedication and leadership, she’s seen firsthand the impact of her contributions. From organizing volunteer teams to participating in events herself, she’s helped create lasting connections and spread joy to families navigating medical complexity.
“Knowing that our club’s efforts bring happiness to these families makes me feel like we’re really making a difference,” she said. “It’s so rewarding to see the smiles on everyone’s faces and know we’ve played a part in that.”
As she prepares for college and the next chapter of her life, she hopes the Better2gether Club will continue to thrive, inspiring the next generation of students to carry on the work she’s so passionate about. For now, she’s grateful for the experiences that have shaped her and looks forward to continuing to support Better2gether in any way she can.
Her advice to other high school students considering volunteering? “Starting a club has been so worth it. It’s paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined,” she said.
